German Film Festival |
The Embassy of German released the programming for the 2012 German Film Festival. The Festival premieres Thursday, January 26th and runs throughout the year, presenting a movie per month.

January, 26th – Do Outro Lado, 2007, directed by Fatih Akin
Initially Nejat does not approve his father's relationship with the prostitute Yeter. This situation changes when he discovers that his father constantly sends money to Turkey in order to pay Yeter daughter's studies. After Yeter sudden death, Nejat decides to go to Istanbul to find Ayten the daughter of Yeter. There he discovers that she became a political activist. Determined to find her, Nejat faces several difficulties.
February, 23rd – Luzes Distantes, 2003, directed by Hans-Christian Schmid
The river Oder in Frankfurt marks the division between two very different worlds. Rich and poor live in this area in search of happiness. The drama in the lives of several recurring characters is portrayed, but their fate will change in two days of theft, deception, love, help, hope and despair.

It all started in 1964 in a village that gives the title to the film, set in the depressed southern Italy. Given the lack of prospects, the Amato decides to embark on an adventure and emigrate to Germany. Lara serves as interpreter for her deaf parents, helping them to communicate with others. As she grows up she reveals a great talent. It is when there is a dilemma in her life because to embrace a promising career she will have to move to Berlin and leave her parents.
September, 27th – Berlin is in Gemany, 2001, directed by Hannes Stöhr
Martin Schulz is released after serving a sentence of eleven years in prison. After liberation, Martin receives the objects that have been removed from him: a blue identification card of the former GDR, the license of the former GDR and also money from the former GDR. Martin is hopeful to return home, but barely recognize Germany. The absence of eleven years served as a journey through time and Martin is struggling with difficulties in finding a place in this "new world".
October, 25th – Adeus, Lênin, 2003, directed Wolfgang Becker
Alexander's mother, a faithful devotee of socialism in East Germany, has a heart attack and falls into a coma. She awakes just after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Aware that another heart attack would be fatal, Alexander does everything for her to continue living in a delusional socialist Germany, changing packaging of industrial products and even inventing television documentaries to make her believe that nothing changed.
November 29th - A Vida dos Outros, 2006, directed Florian Henckel Von Donnersmarck
Georg Dreyman is the greatest playwright of East Germany, is considered by many the perfect model for the country, since he does not challenge the government or its political system. Despite this, the Minister Bruno Hempf fit to follow his steps to find out if Dreyman has something to hide.

RESTAURANT WEEK

This week, Brasília hosts the sixth edition of Restaurant Week, an important gastronomic event that is a success all over the country. Over 70 restaurants are participating of Restaurante Week that aims democratize the haute cuisine.
The event is a perfect chance to taste plates from different cultures. It’s a ride through Brazilian cuisine, with its regionalist flavors, but also an opportunity to know and/or taste food from countries like Japan, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Peru among many others.
Besides having a gastronomic diversity, Restaurante Week is also committed to social responsibility. The customer may add R$ 1,00 in the bill that will be handed to an institution that needs it. This time, Escola Classe 08 do Cruzeiro was chosen by the organization

1º Festival Internacional de Artes
(1st International Festival of Arts)

Brasília was designed to be a city surrounded by Arts. This is what the 1º Festival Internacional de Artes (1st International Festival of Arts) pretends to do for the capital. Renowned artist will be performing in Brasília in January and February in free presentations.
The event will be annual, and in its first edition will bring music, art and leisure to Brasilia’s citizens and the tourists, with national and international attractions. The Festival will feature dance performances, concerts, exhibitions and workshops. Brazilian singers Gilberto Gil, Vanessa da Mata, Ney Matogrosso and Milton Nascimento are among the attractions of the Festival. Samba singer Paulinho da Viola is set to open the event this Wednesday. The presentations will be held in different locations of Brasília and its “satellite towns’.

The first edition of Cultura Mostra de Cinema (Cultura Film Festival) begins this week at Shopping Iguatemi’s Livraria Cultura. The event features movies that were selected in Mostra Internacional de Cinema de São Paulo (São Paulo International Film Festival).
A total of ten productions will be shown at the film festival. Movies from USA, Russia, Germany, Sweden and France are on the programming. Cultura Mostra de Cinema (Cultura Film Festival) will be held from January 6th, to January 29th.

Cirque Du Soleil

Cirque Du Soleil returns to Brasília in 2012 with the spectacle Varekai. The season begins in February 23rd and remains in the city for a month. Brasília is the fourth capital of Brazil to host the spectacle.
Written and directed by Dominic Champagne, Varekai is an explosive fusion of theater, dance, music and thrilling acrobatics. Varekai means “anywhere” and tells the story of Icaro, a young man who could fly and, for getting too close to the sun, had his wings melted. Unable to fly, Icaro falls in a magic forest, at a volcano peak, a world full of magic creatures. Over there, he meets a mysterious young woman as well as the guards of Varekai, who lead the tribe and compete with each other. The soundtrack is composed by music from different cultures and different countries.
Varekai will be presented in the external area of Parkshopping, at a tent that has capacity to host over two thousand people. The tickets can already be purchased at the official box office of the show located in Parkshopping.

After 45 years, the original project of the architect Oscar Niemeyer to the Esplanada dos Ministérios (Esplanade of the Ministries) was finished with the openning of the Conjunto Cultural da República (Republic Cultural District). Formed by the Museu Nacional Honestino Guimarães (National Museum Honestino Guimarães) and by the Biblioteca Naional Leonel de Moura Brizola (National Library Leonel de Moura Brizola). To better serve all visitors, the museum has a 4 start restaurant, three water mirrors around it and many available services. Besides all that and the eye-catching architecture and various exhibits of national and international arts, it provides an outmost high-tech lightning that gives an genuine view of the arts exposed.
