TEATRO NACIONAL CLÁUDIO SANTORO

| The Cláudio Santoro National Theater calls attention by its pyramidal shape. This theater was a Niemeyer project and it was inaugurated on April 21, 1981. The Theater is a cultural facility comprised of 3 theater rooms, 2 foyers, and exhibition galleries. With 35,000 square meters and 14 floors, the facility offers ideal spaces for small, medium and large events. |

CATEDRAL METROPOLITANA
(Metropolitan Cathedral)

| Designed by Oscar Niemeyer with futuristic lines, the Cathedral features sculptures signed by Ceschiatti, vitreous by Marianne Peretti, and paintings by Athos Bulcão and Di Cavalcanti. It is a very special Brasilia monument by Oscar Niemeyer; the Cathedral's design represents hands raised in prayer towards the sky. In the Square at the entrance to the Cathedral, you meet sculptures in bronze, each one three meters high, representing the evangelists Matthew, Luke and John. Cast in 1968 by Alfredo Ceschiatti, assisted by Dante Croce, the statues are in a baroque style, establishing a link between the colonial and modern architectures. The statues of angels hanging from the Cathedral ceiling were also made by the two artists in 1970 |

TORRE DE TV
(TV Tower)

The TV Tower was designed by Lúcio Costa; it is 224-meter tall, and irradiates sound and image to radio and TV stations. In front of it, you will find the so-called "Era Espacial", a sculpture from the artist Alexandre Wakenwith. The TV Tower also features, at 25 meters, a museum inside (Museu das Gemas) and a 75-meter tall observatory with capacity for 150 people. Surrounding the tower, you will find the Crafts Fair with local and regional products. The tower has the largest and most traditional fair in town.

Time: The tower is o pen for visitation daily. The fair takes place on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. The Museu das Gemas (Gems Museum) and the observatory are open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.

CONGRESSO NACIONAL
(National Congress)

| Government Headquarters of Brazil's Legislative office, Congresso Nacional is comprised of the "Senado Federal" (Senate), which is located on the right side, represented by a convex plate and "Câmara dos Deputados" (House of Representatives) on the left side. |
| The blocks in the form of an H have 28 floors and house administrative activities. This monument is the city's postcard. During a certain time of the year, a sunset of rare beauty can be seen from the Congress through the space between the buildings. |

PALÁCIO DA ALVORADA
(Alvorada Palace)

Designed by Oscar Niemeyer, the Palace was the first building to be inaugurated in Brasília, and it is the official residence of the president. The columns of the Palace are considered to be the symbols of the city. There is also a chapel in the Palace, whose façade was designed by Athos Bulcão.
The palace is currently not open to the public, although President Lula's project is to open it for visitation in 2004.

PANTEÃO DA PÁTRIA TANCREDO NEVES

It is a monument in behalf of democracy and freedom, and was built in honor of the former Brazilian President Tancredo Neves. The project was designed by Oscar Niemeyer. The monument also displays collections and pieces of several artists, such as Athos Bulcão, João Câmara and Mariane Peretti.

QUARTEL GENERAL DO EXÉRCITO

| Designed by Oscar Niemeyer, the Military Headquarter is a compound of 10 buildings, one of them being the Army Ministry's Office. At the top floor, there is a room where the most important military ceremonies take place. At that same floor, there is an amazing indoor garden, which was projected by Burle Marx, together with a shell that symbolizes Duque de Caxias´ sword handle, as he is the patron of the Brazilian Army. Also the headquarters features the Pedro Calmon Theater, host of great plays and a permanent exhibition. |

EIXO MONUMENTAL
(Monumental Axle)

| The "Eixo Monumental" (Monumental Axle) is one of the city's main avenues, the "body" of the airplane that characterizes Brasilia's famous design. |
| Leaving from the intersection of the Eixo Rodoviário and the Eixo Monumental ("Plataforma Rodoviária" - Bus Platform) and taking the Eixo Monumental to the east, you can see the main cultural sectors of Brasilia, dedicated to theaters ("Teatro Nacional Cláudio Santoro" - Cláudio Santoro National Theater -), libraries (there is a large one currently under construction and many existing ones inside the ministries), museums, sculptures and other elements. There is also the "Catedral Metropolitana" (Metropolitan Cathedral), the "Esplanada dos Ministérios" (Ministries Esplanade) and the "Palácio do Itamaraty" (Itamaraty Palace). |
| The Eixo Monumental ends to the east in the "Praça dos Três Poderes" (Square of the Three Powers), where you can find the headquarters of the Executive ("Palácio do Planalto"), Judiciary ("Palácio da Justiça") and Legislative ("Congresso Nacional") Powers. |
| Behind the "Praça dos Três Poderes" there is access to the President's official residence, "Palácio da Alvorada" (Palace of Dawn), at the edge of the "Lago Paranoá" (Paranoá Lake). |
| All these sites are characterized by having the same structural elements, a simple set of geometric lines in diverse positions, which assure and enrich the harmony of the set. |
| Leaving from the same central point to the west, you can see important sites of the city, such as the "Torre de TV" (TV Tower), the "Parque da Cidade" (City's park), the Nilson Nelson Stadium, the Planetarium, the Convention Center, the "Clube do Choro", the Indian Museum, among others. |
| Finally, the Eixo Monumental ends to the west at the "Rodoferroviária" (Interstate Bus Station). |
