CHEMICAL PEELING is one of the best methods to treat the sun-damaged areas and pre-cancerous growths. During a chemical peel, a solution is applied to the skin surface, causing the surface cells to separate and peel off, thus allowing new skin to regenerate. Depending upon the type of peel, a reaction similar to a sunburn occurs following the procedure. Healing takes about 7 to 14 days. The new skin is smoother and less wrinkled than the old skin, and may also be more even in color. A chemical peel may be performed on the face, neck, chest, hands, arms and legs. A series of peels may be needed to achieve best results.

Another very effective method is the PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY (PDT).

PDT is a treatment that uses a drug, called a photosensitizer and a particular type of light. When photosensitizers are exposed to a specific wavelength of light, they produce a form of oxygen that kills the target cells. Because the photosensitizer is preferentially absorbed by hyperproliferative tissue and the light source is directly targeted on the lesional tissue, PDT achieves a high selectivity, minimizing damage to adjacent health structures. In dermatology, we use topical photosensitizers: a cream or a solution. There are no systemic side effects. PDT is also used for acne treatment, with very good results.

Every year nearly 60,000 people worldwide die from skin cancer caused by too much sun, according to a new study from the World Health Organization (WHO).

Of the 60,000 deaths, 48,000 are caused by melanomas
and 12,000 by other skin cancers.
