At the peak of the Brazilian colonialism, more precisely in 1722, Rio Quente had its hot water fountains discovered by Bartolomeu Bueno da Silva Filho, and was named Caldas Velhas. Only in 1988, the city was emancipated, becoming something more than just a Caldas Novas’ district, now known to be a great tourist spot, along with its neighbor, bringing thousands and thousands of people every year.
Located near urban centers such as Goiânia, Brasília Uberlândia, Uberaba and São Paulo, the county has privileged nature: its tropical, hot and moist climate all year long (the annual average temperature is 23ºC), perfect for the visitors, who are able to enjoy its thermal waters in pleasant conditions, among other natural beauties. The water volume produced by its region’s springs is approximately 6.228.000 liters per hour, which renew the 150 million litters of water of the Inn’s swimming pools, water park every day. The temperature of the water, which are extremely clear, is around 37,5 ºC! This is due to the fact that the groundwater is close to the Earth’s inner layers, heating up and pressurizing the water as soon as it goes back to the surface.
Even though the biggest slice of the city’s financial resources comes from the tourism, headed by the success and the international reputation of the Inn, Rio Quente has good agriculture, with a special highlight on the corn and rice cultivation, and also the practice of milk livestock. |

Events and other attractions – In January, there are the parties of Kings Saints and San Sebastian. In June, Saint John, Saint Peter and San Anthony are the honored ones. The Festival of the Nations, exclusive for the guests of the Inn, also takes place every year, and pays tribute to the culture, folklore and costumes of many countries. The Inn also makes parties and other events along the year.
The county still has the Parque Estadual Serra de Caldas (Caldas Sierra State Park), built in 1970 with the objective to protect the area of the rainy waters that supply the groundwater. The Park is also responsible for the research and the preservation of a small part of the Goias’ savannah, and also for the environmental education of the community and tourists. Ultimately, there’s the Ribeirão das Águas Quentes (Hot Waters Riverside), which holds the camping areas to its margins. |
