Ambassador of Mexico, Mrs. Cecilia Soto Gonzalez, Senator José Sarney and the translator of "Pedro Páramo", and friends to the author, Mr. Eric Nepomuceno.

On March 17th, the Ambassador of Mexico, Mrs. Cecilia Soto González invited all the diplomatic community and citizens from Brasília to the release of the classic of the Latin American literature, and why not saying the world's, "Pedro Páramo". The event was held at the Ministry of Culture, at the gallery "Espaço Cultural".

The Brazilian writer Eric Nepomuceno touched all guests with a very emotional speech. "You should publicize it", suggested the enthusiastic Senator José Sarney.

In the year when "Pedro Páramo" celebrates its 50th anniversary, the friend and "pupil" of many years, the Brazilian writer Eric Nepomuceno, translated this version of the book into Portuguese. After a brief speech of Ambassador Mrs. Cecilia Soto Gonzalez, presenting Juan Rulfo and "Pedro Páramo" to the guests, Eric Nepomuceno told the audience how he met Juan Rulfo and how their friendship developed until they were very close friends, neighbours in Mexico, where Rulfo welcomed and kept company to Eric Nepomuceno and his family.

Sitting by the Ambassador and Mr. Eric Nepomuceno were the former President and Senator of the Republic, Mr. José Sarney, member of the "Academia Brasileira de Letras" (Brazilian Letters Academy), Mrs. Nélida Piñon, journalist, novelist, short story writer and teacher, also member of the "Academia Brasileira de Letras" and the Coordinator of the "Plano Nacional do Livro e Leitura" (National Plan of the Book and Literature), Mr. Galeno Amorim.

Mrs. Nélida Piñon spoke about the technical nuances of the novel and how Juan Rulfo not only created an absolutelly new universe, but also influenced in the work of many Latin American authors after the book was first publicized. Mrs. Piñon took the guests to a "trip" through the story and analyzed the intrinsic aspects of the characters, the language and syntax, the techniques.

Senator José Sarney told the audience how much the book influenced his work and touched his soul.

Then, Mr. José Sarney explained how the "discovery" of Pedro Páramo opened his mind to the great works of the Lating American's authors and enchanted his already keen critical sense regarding literature and enriched his horizons, making him more prepared to become one of the most important and recognized writers in Brazil.

Many lovers of literature were present at the event.

After the lecture, Ambassador González invited the guests to the cocktail at the hall of the gallery, where the book was displayed, for sale, and where Mr. Eric Nepomuceno gave his autograph for it.

A Little More About "Pedro Páramo" and Juan Rulfo

"Pedro Páramo", a dream-like tale that intertwines a young man's, Juan Preciado, quest to find his lost father and reclaim his patrimony with the father's obsessive love for a woman who will not be possessed - Susana San Juan. Written by Juan Rulfo, "Pedro Páramo" is one of Spanish America's greatest novels, describing deserted villages of rural Mexico, where images and memories of the past linger like unquiet ghosts, that haunted the imagination of Rulfo.
Mexican novelist and short story writer, one of Spanish America's most esteemed authors. Juan Rulfo was a very enigmatic writer. Rulfo's reputation is based on two slim books, El llano en llamas (The Burning Plain), published in 1953, a collection of short stories, which included his admired tale 'Tell Them, Not to Kill Me!', and the novel Pedro Páramo, from 1955.
